Mike

“Hey babe, that smells amazing,” I say as I walk in the door, a smile instantly on my face.

“Man, she’s never moving out,” Lee says, walking into the kitchen with me. “She’s the best cook.”

“I made spaghetti with homemade sauce and noodles, since there was no school today. I thought I would do something special.” Alice leans down and pulls garlic bread out of the oven.

“Yep, I don’t care what happens between you and Mike—you are never leaving,” Lee says, making Alice blush as he takes his seat at the table.

Not only has she cooked dinner for us, but she set the table too.

I come up behind her and wrap my arms around her waist, nuzzling her neck.

“You know you don’t have to feed us. You don’t owe us anything.”

She turns in my arms and wraps her arms around my neck.

“I know, but I love to cook, and I finally have someone to do it for.”

I kiss her. It’s supposed to be a quick peck, but her lips are so sweet, I find myself sliding into it.

“Hey, less kissing, more eating. Some of us are single and hungry over here,” Lee yells out from the table, and I feel Alice’s smile against my lips.

I have a sudden vision of her in this house, our kids running around, and me coming home to wonderful smells and a warm woman.

I know that I am falling for her. Actually, who am I kidding? I’ve fallen for her but I want to take some time. She has a lot going on right now.

Alice brings the dishes to the table, and we sit down to eat.

The food, of course, is fabulous, and Lee and I tell her all about our day at the

garage and some strange stuff we find in cars.

Just as we are starting to clear the table, there is a loud knock at the door.

“I’ll get it,” Lee says, handing me the plates as he makes his way to the front.

He opens the door and I can see his posture stiffen. I have a sinking feeling I know who is on the other side. I peek into the kitchen and see that Alice hasn’t heard anything yet.

I sit the dishes on the counter quickly and meet Lee at the door. Maybe we can get rid of him before she notices he is here.

“Where is my woman?” Tate asks, and I can smell the beer on his breath.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but your woman isn’t here,” Lee says.

“Yes, she is. Her car is right there.” Tate points and wobbles to the side, obviously drunk. He must have followed me home from the garage. I curse myself for not being more careful. He must have found out that Alice wasn’t home and is staying with us.

“Get out of my way. I want to see her. She’s mine and I will have her,” Tate slurs. He is starting to get belligerent, and I’m afraid Alice will hear him.

“Look dude, you need to get off of my property or I am going to call the cops.
